Ever felt like just packing up, running away and never returning? Me too. Over the years I was constantly stressed, overwhelmed and not managing anything. The best way I could manage was to go for short breaks. But when I started getting overwhelmed again, I'd repeat the process. It worked for a while, but eventually I had to find other ways to manage my stress.
Sometimes we can all get overwhelmed and stressed. The trick is finding the best way to manage it quickly and effectively, and then recover and focus on what's important to you. Here are 6 ways I have personally used to reduce that feeling of overwhelm and stress.
1. Go on a Holiday
Just get away, for a day, a weekend or even just a short holiday if you can. Use this time to relax, focus on you and reevaluate things. When I did this, I tended to go down the coast and relax on the beach for a couple of days. I tended to do most of the other points as well when doing this for added effect.
2. Exercise
Exercise is one of the best things for your body. One of my daily practices now is exercise, whether it is going to a yoga class, or hitting the gym, I always feel better after a workout session.
3. Take a time out from life
Go do something completely different that gets your mind off things. Go get a massage, go to the cinemas or even just sit at home and get engrossed in an amazing book. Getting your mind off things for a few hours will do wonders for your stress levels.4. Breathing practices or meditation
Breathing practices and meditation are an amazingly simple and effective way to decrease your stress levels and reduce any feeling of overwhelm. If meditation isn't something that you want to try, a simple breathing exercise will work just as well. Try 3 minutes of deep breathes, focusing on your breathing. By the end you will feel much better. Now I have a breathing practice and a meditation as part of my morning routine.
5. Supplements
When you just aren't sure what to do, adaptogen based supplements can give your body that extra boost it needs to reduce it's cortisol levels and help manage stress. Stress Less is an evidence based supplement that works wonders.
6. Sleep
Are you getting the right amount of sleep? Too much or too little can be a sign of overwhelm and stress. When I am not able to get enough sleep, I use melatonin to help aid my sleep, but if I am getting too much I try to find other ways to manage my stress.
There are plenty of ways you can manage that feeling of overwhelm. These are just some ways that I have personally used that I found work for me. Over time, developing the right healthy habits I have found is one of the most effective ways of managing stress and that dreaded feeling of overwhelm.
